I ordered medium size. Before putting this outside in a sheltered cat house, I tried it out in the kitchen. I have read the instructions carefully. First, I checked the temperature controls. I placed a digital thermometer underneath and then back on top. The highest temperature it reached under the mat was 97 (this was on setting #6 HIGH / 135 degrees). Above the mat, the temperature dropped to 75 degrees at the same high setting #6. Bottom line: This rug has no working thermostats and doesn't warm anything except the earthworm in the winter. Second, I checked the cord for the claimed chew guard. While it was "pretty good," it wasn't metal and so small (even with a hard plastic case) that a kitten could easily chew on it. The environment consumes 75 watts. Third: As mentioned before, I ordered a medium size. I found myself wondering why order medium or large when most of the time the heat only comes from the center? I was planning to use this rug for wild animals and wanted a larger rug where they could snuggle/snuggle up against each other in the winter cold. In general, risking anything electrical on an animal is not worth it. I just don't understand how anyone can rate this product positively. i will return it
