Review on πŸ”Œ Enhanced Performance Motorola SB5100 Surfboard Cable Modem by Mark Saric

Revainrating 5 out of 5

DO NOT BUY USED! It is still available from the cable provider.

Don't buy a used cable modem unless you can be sure it's not already registered with your cable provider! I have bought this modem several times (used). A few months ago to replace the one I was paying monthly rent for. I returned the old modem to my cable company and requested activation of my new (used) modem. My wife usually pays the bills, but I happened to check my cable bill to see if my monthly payment had changed and found that I was still paying rent for the modem. When I called my cable/internet provider to request a rent deduction from my account, the support person stated that this modem was already on their system. Basically, I bought stolen goods from Revain. If you want to buy your own modem, buy a new one. If you're buying a used one, you probably won't get out of the rental if it was already on your carrier's system. In my case: Comcast. After a few months I have to turn on the modem, plug the power back in and reboot my system. Essentially restarting the modem. After that, it works great for several months before slowing down again and requiring a reboot. The old modem and the replacement modem had to be restarted periodically to maintain speed. The speed of my modem varies between 16 Mbps and 33 Mbps depending on the time of day and how long it has been since the modem was restarted. I bought another modem (not this one). one) to replace an existing modem (again). But this time I ordered a new one. I don't expect to have to pay rent for a new replacement. :-)
