I have a dead car battery that I don't want to throw away. It's only used in projects to provide a relatively stable 12V rail. It can't provide the cold crank current needed to start my car, which is fine. I just bought a new replacement. It's been a few years now and I'm sitting on the charger for servicing but after measuring the voltage it fell off. My little Battery Tender Jr was no longer up to the maintenance task. He just couldn't give enough juice. It is also shown as "green" which means that it is not in charging mode but in service mode. So he just deployed a floating charge. Well, it's time to take something stronger. This 5A block works well. It immediately located the battery and started a full charge. I tried the restore function. Hopefully it will do something, but I don't have a large testing load and don't have time to run a bunch of tests (pun intended). However, I know this battery is dead, but I just think I'll leave it for other projects. My impressions of the charger are good. The fit and finish looks fine. No problem. The brackets look strong. The wires appear to be thick and they are soldered to the terminals rather than just crimped. I like that the clamps are made of plastic. Don't let anyone tell you this is bad. If it were placed in metal I would be afraid of making contact with one of the connectors and then accidentally touching another conductive surface. Anything that a) improves comfort when using clamps and b) increases safety is fine with me. I also have this thing where I'm touching a bare metal positive clip like a force is going through me. Understand yourself. Quick connectors are also very useful. I want to measure the actual battery voltage without the charger affecting the results. Just use quick connectors. I stick the probes in there and voila. My battery and charger are actually awkwardly placed so they are not as convenient to test and use. Having something to facilitate this is a bonus. Finally, terminal cleaners are a huge bonus. I should have gotten something similar many years ago. I always see dirt on the positive pole. I know it's only a few bucks and shouldn't sway my opinion, but what can I say? I'm a simpleton. Throw in some candy, why not? In general it works as promised. A simple 5A smart charger that you don't have to worry about misusing. My Battery Tender Jr is downgraded to smaller batteries.
