I'm an electronics technician with many years of experience with PCs, from early versions of DOS (even before DOS with the Apple 2 in the late 1970's) to the latest high-end laptops. When I read the negative reviews on this product (and others like it) I thought it must be cockpit installation mistakes made by tech noobs, but I was wrong. My first clue was when I unpacked the device and noticed that the installation instructions were in very poor English and showed screenshots that were clearly pre-Windows 10 (maybe pre-pre). After installing it, I saw the download speed fluctuate between 170Mbps and 250Mbps, and that was only after I ran an extension cord to take it to a better place. The device also got very hot after several speed tests, which was a sure sign of poor endurance. the lid is open or closed (I have a very large display on my desktop that I only use in the office). Moving my laptop just a few feet from my wireless router gives me just over 400 Mbps, which is the max my cable company says for my location. return mine) and after receiving the Netgear model A7000, I did just that. The error-free installation took a few minutes and I'm now consistently getting over 450Mbps when the unit is inches above my laptop. The bottom line is that you should be wary of these cheap, inferior devices (all based on the same electronics and old, outdated drivers) and pay the price for a product from a supplier with the highest quality rating. PS: This is the first time I've ever written a product review for a product.
