Review on Big Gator Tools STD1000DGNP V-Drill Guide: Accurate and Versatile Drilling Solution by Eduardo Davis

Well done but design flaws

Drilled holes in two Oak 2x6s all day yesterday for a project. I wanted people to like this device as it is a cheaper alternative to buying a drill for quick work. Items are durable and made from good materials for the job. And it worked, just not as well as it could. There are markings on each side of the block that correspond to the holes for each drill size. The problem is you can't secure it with clamps because they constricted it. When you tighten the adjacent clamp, the block moves, which is very frustrating. You can staple one end to the board, but the other end tends to move, so you really have to pinch it. You also needed to have a groove in the center of the holes running the length of the block at the top where you could line it up with your mark. Finally, the base blocks light from the surface, making it difficult to see where your mark is when the block is on the surface. I also found that it left marks on both sides of the hole, parallel to the length of the block, probably due to vibration while drilling. I think I need to sand them down. If they made the block square on both sides instead of conical, that would be a better design.

Pros
  • Lots of positive vibes
Cons
  • Was damaged
