Inside the cap is a convex disc that hangs almost in a floating manner from the underside of the cap. Its purpose is to allow air to enter the gas tank to replace gasoline as it is used up. Mine broke because she was thirty years old. When I unscrew the cap (the washer is missing at this point), the engine stops because there is a vacuum in the tank. When I let go of it, it rumbles and gas starts squirting out of the tank. I was hesitant to order the cap as there are different sizes but at this price I had nothing to lose. Fits perfectly!
