Firstly, as I only do woodwork in the garage my experience is limited. I was looking for a creative way to attach metal legs to a live edge table that I just completed. Although I just didn't think using a screw would give me the holding power I needed. I found them online and tried a few cuts first. My method was to drill a small hole first, then use a tap and just go in. I removed the drill bit and used a small wrench to slowly unscrew the tap. I was afraid I might clean up the hole by flipping the drill bit. I've done a few other jobs since then and will probably consider this more than through bolts or screws.
