Review on πŸ”₯ WTB ThickSlick Comp: High-performance Tire for Ultimate Durability and Traction by Tim Knoepfle

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Heavy and wears out quickly, but sticks to the road and looks good

The streets in the town where I live are deserted. So much so that residents began celebrating birthdays and holidays, often decorating neighbors' potholes with garlands, banners and hats to celebrate the occasion. It has gotten so bad that there are now groups of pothole wardens who "illegally" fill up the potholes to save the wheels of the uninitiated who unfortunately walk their roads. This influenced my decision to build a bike for my daily commute. I wanted a wide tire that would give me a good contact patch, a "sticky” tire that would keep me from slipping on corners with accidentally gravel-filled potholes around town, and a tire that could handle bumps. when I accidentally hit a pothole. These tires met all of those requirements, but I didn't compromise on what I wanted in a tire. Because these tires are wider and protected by puncture protection, they are very heavy. Very very very difficult. I have a hard time climbing some of the longer hills and I'm usually very good at climbing hills on my bike. I would say climbing is usually my specialty (I mountain bike and road bike regularly). The other issue with these tires is that they wear out fairly quickly compared to my Continental GP 4000s ii tires or set of tires on my mountain bike. Of course, these tires are designed for different purposes, but after 100 miles on fat slicks, they started to change from round to squarer. The final downside to these tires is that they are the stiffest tires I have ever put on a wheel due to the reinforced sidewall. Still, these tires look damn good thanks to their wide profile and big white lettering. The best thing is that I have not gotten an apartment with them yet, although I have driven on very bad roads where I would not dare to collide with my car.

Pros
  • Puncture Protection: The thicker the tire, the harder it is for glass, pins, clips and other urban clutter to penetrate.
Cons
  • Low maintainability
