So far so good - but difficult to set up

For my purposes, this looks like a winner. I use a Workrite SE - ###### - X - XX### - ## Sierra Electric Equal Corner Workcenter (height adjustable) and it is important to have one less cable moving up and down the workbench. Over 20+ years of installing and using consumer networking equipment, it has become a common rule of thumb that the installer and driver on the product CD are generally out of date. Downloading the latest drivers and utilities from the company's website is usually safer. In this case it is not. The device I received came with a CD that contained more up-to-date drivers and utilities than the ASUS website for that model. The problems I had installing on Win7 x64 (i.e. the software refused to recognize the adapter) were due to this. Filling out the support form and calling ASUS support finally clarified the issue. ASUS needs to update the download on its website for this device. The only other tricky issue was getting the full 300Mbps speed - the device seemed to get stuck at "g" speed (54Mbps). The device is not running at maximum speed with "TKIP" encryption and you need to select "AES", which for some reason is not the default. After changing that and using the included handy flexible extension cord to position the device so that it had a relatively clear "view" of the router (minimal metal in between), it worked fine at the full 300Mbps. Will be updated with any news about dropouts or other issues.

Pros
  • Computers and accessories
Cons
  • Questionable purchase for seniors
