In other reviews I noticed that the smooth surface of the spreader made the masa difficult to lift, so I had an idea of how I could rough it up a bit when it came time to use it. The first time I washed the spatula, I used a Magic Eraser sponge and gently buffed the surface to make it a little less shiny. I had no problem finding a good piece of masa to spread it on. Also, some have said that you need to be a certain size bowl to spread, but I had no problem spreading the bowl wider than the shaker itself. I know the demo video shows the use of a specific sized bowl, but if you enjoy making large tamales like I do, then this one will do. Just use a lighter hand when spreading to avoid denting the guides on either side. It worked great to make 100+ tamales in just a few hours instead of spending all day spooning them up. What an ingenious invention!
