If it fails, it fails "closed "!

We used this in our robot for the IEEE SouthEastCon 2016 hardware competition last week. We bought this item a couple of months ago and it has worked great in fairly heavy use (robot vibration and constant wiring changes due to design changes). However, the day before the competition in Norfolk, Virginia, a decision was made to stop work. It was connected to a 12V battery and would output 5V to Arduino, servos, sonar, etc., but when it failed it would "short out" and send 12V to all of those devices. It took us almost all day to fix the robot. Luckily we had spare parts and when we didn't have them other teams were willing to help. After talking to other people from other colleges, we learned that the same thing had happened to another team in a competition with a robot with the exact same product. We took 6th place by replacing the Drok voltage regulator with a small breadboard and two L7805CVs. We just want people to know that when these devices fail, they fail by sending the full input voltage through the output terminals.

Pros
  • Excellent overall performance
Cons
  • Hard to say
