Choose another brand.

This Kwikset 99130 SmartCode lasted just over a year before malfunctioning. When unlocking and locking, the bolt began to move slowly. I changed the batteries twice just to make sure I wasn't putting bad batteries in, but even so the locking mechanism moved very slowly and then started to "cling" during the locking process. In the end we just stopped using the latch and went back to rummaging through our pockets for the keys. We installed this lock on our back door to the garage (the most used door) and over time the buttons we chose for our entry code got dirtier than the other buttons. Yes, yes, I did clean the door handles and button trims from time to time, but I'm including this information because I think those buttons would have worn off a bit if the latch had lasted more than a year. This latch replaced the standard bronze Kwikset latch. I recently replaced all of the liftgate and garage door handles because the bronze finish on the original Kwikset door handles looked very worn (even on the least used doors). Another thing that may not bother some but annoyed me was that the opening sound was very loud. SO for this money I say choose another brand. If for any reason you decide to buy this brand, you should know that while Kwikset is cheaper than others, overall the quality is simply lacking. Side note: We have a 90 year old farmhouse outside of town and my grandmother replaced the original lock on the front door in the early 1950's. The door lock and handle are still there and work perfectly. qualitative.
