Review on 🌿 API ALGAEFIX Algae Control: The Ultimate Solution in a 16-Ounce Bottle by Andrea Bogenschutz

Kills fish when used as directed

This product is dangerous. Yes it works but the dose they suggest made my fish lethargic and officially killed a tough zebrafish today. That was after 2 partial water changes. My LFS also recommended this. Only after that did I see countless reviews with similar stories. The API is required to warn people about this label and the IMO recommendations for lower dosages. I'm surprised they haven't been sued, but I guess people aren't going to sue over $1 fish. Details: I fought with seaweed/diatoms. I tried many things before I decided to switch to chemistry. I added 6ml per 60 gallon tank as directed on the label. I immediately noticed that the tank was cloudy. After 4 hours, piebalds hid in the sand. I had Julie Corey Cats huddled in the corners. I had other panels hanging upstairs. All unusual behavior. I searched for this product and was appalled at all the fish kills in the reviews for this product! I just did a 25% water change. The next day I was still seeing the same problems. I did another 25% water change. By this point most of the fish appear to have recovered. A day later Danio was dead. I am currently doing a 40% water change which should bring the "poison" level down to 33% of my water. I think there is some benefit to this product, but only as a last resort and never at the API recommended dosage. I'm stunned they actually say to take it weekly as a maintenance routine! I highly recommend starting with 1/4 the recommended dose and possibly increasing to 1/2. A little more and you can kill your tank. I have no idea if my beneficial bacteria died or not. Monitor this daily. Many people say yes. I've never seen a product kill exactly what is labeled safe, and the company isn't doing anything to change their labeling. Shocking.
