I've been a home brewer for about 18 months and mostly brew partial mash extracts/special grains. I try to gauge and control the gravity of the wort when making a mini mash or during cooking. With a refractometer this is no longer a problem. I've been using berries, local honey and similar ingredients for a long time and I've always had to guess what effect they would have on my beer. Now the guesswork is over. I can make a few drops while mashing or brewing, check the gravity and get right back to work. I don't have to wait for a few ounces to cool for my hydrometer to give an accurate reading. If I can pull out a few drops, they cool quickly to get into the range for accurate readings (120F) with a refractometer. ordered in the evening. Sent next morning. Achieving this was one of the key points that stood between limiting the brewing of the extract and moving to a partial or full mash.
