The extra length allows you to use 1/2 " MDF for templates and allows for deeper inserts.
Glad I chose the longer cutter. The bit, the one that comes with the inserts works well but limits you to 1/4" shackles and limits the depth of the inserts. The longer cutter allows you to use 1/2" thick jigs and still cut a 1/4" deep inlay. With the 4 inch template you can get 3 inlays / 4 inches.
