Review on ๐Ÿ”’ Enhanced Security and Convenience: Prime-Line E 2104 Sliding Door Cylinder Lock with Schlage Keyway by Andre Parsons

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Will not fit Schlage factory keys, re-keyable (plus troubleshooting and child lock)

I fitted this lock cylinder to a Pella Thermastar sliding door that required the plug to be knocked out of the handle to make a hole. That works fine. In fact, the shaft was just the length needed to hook into the internal latch that controlled the toggle switch. (This required removing the existing cap, but that's pretty obvious during installation.) The original key didn't fit in the lock slot; Luckily I had a suitable example of the Schlage key in the aftermarket. I was also able to reinstall the cylinder. Note. I found that after a dry install, which seemed to work fine, the device would not rotate fully after installation. This change was a function of the position of the stock. As you'll notice, the stem rotates a bit without interfering with the cylinder, as if it has some play (about 1/2 turn, but don't quote me). This allows you to return the key to the center for removal without unlocking/relocking the cylinder like most cylinder locks do. This allows you to adjust the shaft to the same angle either clockwise or counterclockwise; for me it only works in one of two positions. TIP: Mark the stem when installing to give you a guide to its position. (A felt tip pen on the top side should work.) If you find the lock does not turn properly, install it in the opposite position. As far as I can tell there are only two orientations for each latch position. Childproof entry/exit. (We used a child lock that was only accessible from the inside.) I've included a picture of my solution, which involves drilling out the inside handle so the tang is accessible with a tool but not your fingers. (This approach requires the cylinder to be attached to the handle, which I used Fun-Tak/Poster putty for.)

Pros
  • Excellent overall performance
Cons
  • Doubtful
