Review on πŸ“‘ Superior Performance and Reliability: Ubiquiti UniFi UAP-PRO WiFi System by Steven Latham

Great for my home

I replaced two consumer APs with one for my home and am very pleased. This AP is ceiling mounted in the middle of my house and provides the same or even better coverage than two APs at opposite ends of my house. Multiple SSIDs allow me to run a guest wireless network separate from the network I use for my devices. The product looks nice on my ceiling, like a flat smoke detector, although the diameter is slightly larger. The LED can be turned off to make it even less visible. The product is actually intended for use in companies where many access points are installed at the same time (hotels, restaurants, schools, etc.). Therefore, the controller software must be installed on a separate computer to configure the access point instead of logging directly into the device to control it. This wasn't a problem for me (I already had a Debian server to use), but it might be annoying for some. The control does not have to run constantly if you do not want to use the guest portal (e.g. if you want your guests to accept the terms and conditions or settle accounts before using the network). The 5 GHz radio frequency is not that strong. like a 2.4GHz radio, so very few devices in my house actually connect to 5GHz. I get slightly better performance when connected to a 5GHz radio, but the difference isn't huge. Those trying to save money and don't need 5GHz should consider the non-PRO version of this product. Final warning for home users with that in mind: it's just a hotspot. It simply connects your wireless devices to your network. It does NOT offer any other services like a normal consumer router like DHCP, DNS or Firewall. You need a separate router in your network.

Pros
  • Enjoyable
Cons
  • Out of fashion
