Review on Motorola SURFboard SB5101 DOCSIS 2.0 Cable Modem - Non-Retail Packaging (Brown Box): High-Speed Internet Access Solution by Robert Lee

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Installation was a breeze and Time Warner only needed the HFC MAC number to switch

Last week I switched to Time Warners Lite Internet with ATT dsl. TWC forgot to tell me I was renting the modem and I was told the monthly rent was $4.99 when I got it. Luckily they gave me a list of approved modems, I looked them all up on Amazon and chose this one because 1. it had the best reviews for the price, 2. I have "lightweight" internet so I didn't need anything Heavy , 3. This thing will pay for itself in 10 months and 4. I'm not a techie and it seemed to me that this would be the easiest to set up. It arrived today and all I had to do was plug it in and call Time Warner. ADVICE. The TWC needs the MAC number of the HFC (not the MAC number of the USB-CPE). The HFC MAC number was both on the box and on the modem. Also, KEEP the TWC representative on the phone until the switch is complete. I had the option of asking them to call me when the switch was complete but the rep kept getting the 'error' so they had to put me through so I'm glad I stayed on the phone. overall pretty quick switching. Took about 15 minutes but if you have an error and get a call back then it's more of a waste of time. You can do it all in one call. The device appears to be of better quality than what TWC gave me, but seems to run just as fast. If it was much faster I would upgrade it to 5 stars. In addition, the vertical profile helps keep the device cool. If for any reason I have a problem with this device I will come back to change my review as now I am very satisfied so easy to set up and now that I have returned the TWC modem I am not wasting money on it the rent.

Pros
  • Very good value for money
Cons
  • Little maintainability
