3/8" drill bit worked well in oak and 3/4" thick plywood. I cut 6 channels about 3 feet long each with no problems. The plywood edges of the rail were a little rough, but that didn't affect the T-rail stopper I had. I haven't tried a 1/2" bit, but I bought a pack for one bit.
