Review on Diamond-Tipped Porcelain Ceramic Standard Tool by Nicholas Lim

Great Quality Great Price

As my Revain username would suggest, I work as a ceramic tile and stone installer. Over the past few years I have been fortunate to work with many clients who have ordered high quality materials for large scale custom installations. Large-format floor and wall tiles made of porcelain stoneware are used more and more frequently for these works. I love the look of these giant tiles (usually 12 x 24 or larger) but they certainly pose some challenges when it comes to a neat and clean install. The work I am about to complete is a good example of these issues as the design includes 12 x 24 shower screens in two showers with large custom alcoves in both. Large tiles (3/8 inch) of this size can be very difficult to work due in large part to the internal stresses that build up in the tiles themselves when they are fired twice. Attempts to cut anywhere near the edges very often end in failure, as internal stresses are released by a sudden, uncontrollable crack. It's even more difficult to cut a large diameter hole to install a shower control valve. Those snippets are a thing of the past. I've had occasions where two or three tiles have broken before I finally got the right piece. This can get expensive, and I have a policy of not trying more than 3 times, at least without pausing and/or trying something else. In this particular job, after breaking the four-tile record while trying to make this big hole, I searched the internet for an alternative. This 4 1/2" hole saw is just the right diameter for the shower valve seal that comes with the Schlueter shower. A system I try to use in every shower I make. Arrived in two days and the Price was much lower than what I pay for similar bits with a much smaller diameter I was skeptical I am very experienced in using hole saws in tiles so installation was easy for me These drill bits do not have a central pilot bit so other methods must be used used to prevent the bit from wandering while drilling. You should also use a low speed drill bit and keep the work and a little wet. Go slow. To make it short. It worked perfectly on the first try .Neatly rimmed hole in hard-paste porcelain tile very near edge of 12 x tile 24. Highly recommended.

Pros
  • Depth of Cut - 1-1/8"
Cons
  • Something Different
