Bought this primarily for hunting. Used it for two seasons in the Colorado mountains. A signal is always sent without errors. I think the key is to have a clear view of the sky and a little patience. No, you can't write with it, but that's the point. A text home would turn into an hour long conversation and that is NOT why I go to the mountains. Where I hunt, I rarely find cell phone reception. For $100 a year (I spend a lot more at Starbucks and they ain't fucking gonna find me in the mountains) I know I'll be found if there's an emergency. This will send text and email to your assigned contacts with exact GPS locations on Google Maps. If there's an emergency at home, you can easily be found through your last sent location. Never used the "Footprints" feature. More money and drains the battery. However, it never went out and I only change the batteries at the start of the season. I hope I never need it, but I never go on a trip without it.
