Good starter at a great price.

Replacement starter for my 2004 Crown Victoria P71 (Police) is about $119 at my local parts store. The problem I had (and had for a while) was that the engine would make a loud screeching noise when starting. I, like many others (posts and forums on the net) thought it was a belt slip or a belt tensioner bearing. I've changed the belt and tensioner but to no avail. For the past few weeks, when starting the car, when the key was turned to the start position, there was a slight knock, and then nothing. You can then turn the key all the way back to the accessory position and back to the original position and the car will start normally. My first thought was, well, the ignition is wearing out. I tried putting the key/barrel assembly back into its original position but that didn't work and the ignition assembly was stuck. After getting rid of the battery and cable connections, I ordered this starter. It arrived in just a few days and once fitted the starting and squeaking problems were gone. The little knock I heard was because the starter was trying to hook into the flywheel and was misaligned on the first crank. The squeaking was due to the starter gear not fully disengaging from the flywheel at startup. This starter turned much faster and all noise and problems stopped. Thought I'd share this with anyone having a similar issue as I've never had a noise like this from a starter before going outside. This starter works well and was over half the price of anything I could get locally.
