I bought this specifically for french fries. It does the job, but it's not easy. Some types of roast potatoes are easy to cut, others are more difficult. The blades are very sharp and I have never figured out how to remove the fries stuck in the slicer without cutting myself on those very sharp blades. I have found that you have to cut off the tail to make the potato stand on its own. When I push the slicer down, the underside of the slicer and the work surface are level, leaving the last 1/4 inch or so of the potato in the slicer. If you try to pull them out, the potato slice will break. You could cut yourself if you try to push the potato slice out with your finger. I'll use a screwdriver next time to see if that makes it easier to remove the remaining potato slices. What I like about it compared to other types of slicers, it doesn't take up counter space and is easy to clean. The crank type is probably your best choice, but it seems like too much work to slice a potato , so I'll keep using it, although it's not ideal, and work on a method to safely remove multiple pieces.
