Review on πŸ” Canon EOS SLR Cameras EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM Lens - Bulk Packaging (White Box) by Kai Wen ᠌

Revainrating 5 out of 5

The quality is top notch, be sure to try it.

In fact, there is no alternative to the Canon 24-105 lens (70-200 f / 2.8 L IS does not count, this is a different range of fr), if you are fond of video and want to get decent quality videos without additional professional body kits: steadicam, slider, etc. The zoom ring is very comfortable in the hand, the smooth action makes it easy to shoot handheld, zooming in or out of the subject. In a stationary scene, after accurately focusing on the object in the zoom preview mode, the lens allows you to move parallel to the focus plane to achieve various special effects by manipulating the zoom ring alone. By the way, on the EF-S 17-55 f / 2.8 IS lens, this is much more difficult to do and the 17-55 is only suitable for crop cameras. The focus ring is just as convenient and easy to adjust the sharpness as the zoom ring zooms in and out of the subject of the scene. I consider the large scaling and coverage of the distances of the optical system when focusing to be an important advantage, i. E. the focus ring stroke at a distance of 1 meter to 10 meters to the object takes almost 80% of the total working stroke of the ring. This allows you to more accurately capture the focus during shooting even on a 3" screen. The main inconvenience when shooting video is the fine detail on the camera's 3" screen, but these are problems of the cameras themselves, not the lens. As I already wrote in the "Disadvantages" paragraph, the Canon 24-105 is too dark to become a top lens for photographers, it is rather a typical travel zoom for travel photography and photography in sunny countries. Shooting at night without a tripod is out of the question. The f/4 aperture is too dark for the lens to become more popular in all genres. He is very good, but his destiny is video, where he is indispensable. Of the specific features: the lens does not tolerate a sharp change of scenes during video shooting, the image stabilization system starts to tear the picture trying to "catch" the frame and the video turns out to be "twitchy".

Pros
  • After the release of a whole series of Canon cameras with the ability to shoot video, the lens has become so in demand that many still do not even know about it.
Cons
  • Of the shortcomings, there is only one that does not allow making this lens a professional staffer - this is its aperture ratio.
