Fairly good, but not great

Fairly good, but not great. I would give 3.5 stars if I could. They're similar to Cray Pa's Expressionist, but a little more contradictory. They're about as soft as they are. Some colors work really well, even better than the cray pas expressionists. But some are less opaque and don't cover as well or get a bit more waxy or crumbly when painted. I only did one drawing with them and had to do the finishing touches with another brand as I needed some detail that was a bit brighter than what they could do with certain colors. I used Gallery Soft Oil Pastels for the required areas as they cover exceptionally well but are also more expensive. But they worked adequately for most of the piece, even though I did it in front of a dark grey, almost black, background. If you worked with white paper and kept the white and highlights it would work. Staedtler are definitely unbreakable. I broke one, but only because I accidentally knelt on it. One annoying thing about them is the packaging. They have one end showing the crayon and the other end has the exact color on the packaging so there can be confusion as to which end to use and if you accidentally use the end that has the color printed on it , it will scratch. I ended up tearing off part of the label on the colors I used. Otherwise they are nicely packaged and have a good choice of colours.

Pros
  • Suitable for a range of painting techniques
Cons
  • Price piggy bank
