You must start with a clean and dry surface; for me, it meant scrubbing the space between my bathroom sink and mirror. I hadn't realized that flecks of toothpaste could travel so far and blend into a light-colored wall so easily, but I digress. I cleaned and allowed the wall to dry, made sure the starting point above the sink was level, and did a dry run with the first set of tiles, putting them in place without taking the backing off. The first thing I saw was that I needed to cut off the little tabs along the edge that would be next to the straight edge from my shower stall (it's a small bathroom), and on the opposite end, I marked the tile where the border would be and used a speed square to mark the line where I would cut. Once the bottom line of tiles was set, I just repeated the process on the following line until I got to the mirror. It was easy to do and completely changed the look of the small space in the bathroom.
