WILL NOT WORK FOR ME in door hardware and locks

The inside of the handle, intended to close with a latch, does not fully engage the latch, we tried to improvise but the product seems defective to me. It doesn't lock and I can just push the door and it opens. Not happy with that. The handle usually works the part that has the knob. I didn't have anything on the door so it works like a handle but the other parts are useless.
