NOT that easy for tailgate locks

The instructions for this lock and lock (P&L) provides a very easy 10 minute install. Not for me. I own a 2004 Dodge Dakota and have encountered problems. . Loosening the rear screws wasn't enough to get it out of the grip. I had to take the cover off. After a few tries I found that a very thin spatula inserted into the bottom of the pad would loosen the bottom ridges and a gentle tug on the corner would remove them. After many tries, I either have too many fingers or not enough, I finally installed P&L. Then I closed the back door, and NOTHING. Pulling the handle up did not unlock the latches! To make matters worse, I have a cover with latches so I couldn't access the back of the tailgate. Always go from anger/frustration to that hole in your stomach. After many, many tries, I used my trusty spatula to loosen the latches and the tailgate opened. lead lessons. Before closing the tailgate, make sure the handle engages the latches properly and the bed cover is open. Another suggestion, only throw out the screw to tighten. It is very difficult to remove once tightened. I had to use a vise. After a few hours of failure, I found that when the P&L is installed on my truck per the instructions, the unit is set too low, not allowing the handle to move far enough to engage the latches. I solved this problem by threading a nut onto the mounting bolt on the inside of the tailgate. This limited the P&L's in-depth position. Now it works great. Ten minutes for the installation...I don't think so!
