I took a few to wash my car (2 bucket system). I'm excited about this idea and saw the sand settle under the grate. The problem I have is keeping them still in the buckets. Despite what I've read of some other people saying that the Lowe's gray 5 gallon bucket with the Lowe logo is too small for the Grit Guard to go all the way up. below I have the opposite problem with these buckets. I bought these buckets in 2009 (several of them) and didn't buy the Yellow Guards until Spring 2014. Maybe they started making the grit guard a little smaller in diameter to accommodate all the feedback and found they aren't going all the way down. in various 5 gallon pails. *shrugs* The Grit Guard "spins" in the bucket when you try to scrub the grate with a washcloth to remove sand. This naturally creates turbulence in the water, which can prevent sand from settling on the bottom. Right now I'm just trying to be careful when rubbing my glove on the guard. Worse, the Grit Guard actually FLOATS. This is the yellow one I'm talking about and I bought it from Revain (not a third party) so I'm pretty sure they aren't fake. Most of the time the attendant tries to go upstairs when I've finished rinsing the glove in the bucket. The one I put in the soap bucket is probably the same one, but of course I can't see it because of the suds. So some modifications will be fine for mine. I'm thinking of drilling some small holes in the "legs" that will allow me to tie in some lead weights to hold the guard down. I'm also trying to figure out what to do with the diameter of the guard to tighten the landing. I might find some really thin sticky rubber pads or something and just put a pair on top of each protector, but I have to deal with diving. I'll think of something. Either way, as I said, the Grit Guard is a great idea, but you may need to tweak yours a bit depending on your buckets and if yours are trying to swim like mine. I would give them 5 stars if I didn't have to modify them to keep them from floating. I don't blame the manufacturer for making them loose in my buckets, but I have no complaints given the specific purpose they are intended for. This is a material selection by the manufacturer.
