The nose of this tool is too short for some stainless steel hardware. When the tool is actuated it is lowered onto the shoulder before releasing the 3 small clamps inside the fitting. If you press hard, it may not work well. My solution was to file the shoulder very carefully. This made the nose appear longer. You'll need a Dremel tool, some grinding wheels, and a very steady hand or tool rest to do this without damaging the tool. But it can be done. The main issue may have been that the dimensions of the fitting were slightly off specification. But the toolmaker has to resize about 50,000 inches to account for this.
