I had the front of a stair step ready to demolish. Replacing that would be a huge hassle. I glued some of these dowels in good quality wood glue and the problem was solved. I just need to find round dowels to make plugs for the holes. You have to position the dowel size transition in the area of the break so some of them get a little deep and require a plug, but that's a small issue to address compared to replacing the tread. The drill was easy to control and the plugs fit well but not too tight. When the glue dried everything hardened.
