I often ride my bikes in a pickup truck and didn't want to bolt some of the fork mounts to the body rails because I put the tops on and off a lot. I bought this bike rack thinking it would be stable in the back of a truck. I've found that I have to center my heaviest bike to keep it from tipping over when cornering. Because the base is so light, your bikes will want to tip over unless you bolt the mount to the vehicle (I use it on some vehicles so it's not an option). After using this mount a few times, I realized I could bolt the fork mounts to plywood and get similar results for a fraction of the price. Make sure you buy the brackets as this item only includes the rail. When you buy the brackets, they don't come with rail mounting screws and the rail only comes with 3 sets of screws. You need to make a trip to the hardware store. All in all, this product works but is not worth the money.
