I saw your ad and trusted Irwin who is usually a quality supplier but in this case they were really wrong. This is supposed to be their top line of Forstner bits, but they have much cheaper Forstner bits that work much better. For one, the cutting edge didn't even feel sharp (Chinese woodworking tools again), giving it the ability to fire at the drill press at the lowest speed. Contact with wood under light pressure only traced the circle without removing the shavings. The increase in pressure caused some chips to be removed, but then stopped the rotation as it caught the wood. calmed down and tried again with the same result. It was so retarded (dull) when cutting that it kept burning the wood (soft pine) so I had to use lube and short up and down strokes until I got to the point shown in the double hole picture, left hole. Remove the bit when cold and check the cutting edges for burrs present on all choppers and three teeth. After carefully trimming the edges, a second cut was made with better results but a cleaner cut with the same problem of having to make short strokes up and down. Note the sides of the cut on both holes showing the burr grooves and while it's better on the right side after straightening, it's not what I would use for a quality product. In the photo on the right a fragment of Freud straight out of the box, no comparison. If you can sharpen it and think it's worth the time to get a new one, do it, but I won't buy another one.
