***UpdateWeek 2. I wanted to share the progress of using the river shrimp layer. The water became crystal clear week after week. You can add two bags if you need plants as the pellets are so light my plants don't stay in the bed. They would swim to the surface of the water. Each time you add terrain, the granules will shed dust or float. Don't worry, the dust will settle quickly. So instead of taking another bag, I used plant anchors. So far they seem happy with plant anchors. My PH was a bit high so I had to correct that before adding the fish. So now the fish can be added and I can't wait. I think it looks great with the landscape. I'm not done with the landscaping yet, I still have work to do on the other corner. I have some tiny tetra neon lights that you can't see. They hide, but if you do a little pellet well, they will happily hide in it. The Strat doesn't seem to bother her at all. I highly recommend this stuff, but it's best to take two bags no matter what size you get to get around 3 inches for your roots to easily absorb, it's very light. Or make anchors for plants. I bought it in anticipation of setting up my aquarium as a planted freshwater aquarium. Live plants seem to like it and it makes a good substrate for shrimp if you want one. In many reviews, the turbidity of the water is criticized. I made this as a brand new tank setup. I don't recommend if you already have fish. You treat it like setting up a new one while laying down your landscape. I didn't prewash anyway. I don't find it necessary, it just makes the pellets raw. On the first day the water is black and cloudy. Put your filter to work! You may need to replace your bio bag with a new one, it really works. I need a new Biomax filter as it has been working hard to purify this water since it was installed. First day, dark black cloud. Did I even think I screwed up? I should have taken a picture for comparison but I forgot. Don't be impatient and don't think you did something wrong. Just be patient and let your filter do the work! 5 hours later, partly cloudy. Crystal clear water the next day. This requires patience! It's not instant. This can take between 6 and 48 hours. Mine took 48 hours to erase. I need to clean the glass on the outside of my tank. I didn't use the bag over pellet method with a small bowl to fill the reservoir with water. I just poured the water in very slowly and gently. At first the water will sizzle, and that's normal. And then I added the necessary water treatments to make it fish safe for tap water since I was using tap water. Now I can't wait to arrange the rest of my landscaping and add fish. I'll post updates when it's set up.
