Watch out for overheating and OEM cards that can be resold

My card is running at a SUPER hot temperature of 112°C. I had stability issues so I contacted Broadcom. They made me aware of the heating problems. WARNING - if you like a quiet system, you can turn off the fans when the system is not busy - you can't do that with this card (at least not mine!) My next graphics card, which would be great if the card could do it would not turn off his fans when not playing! The MegaRAID Storage Manager software for the card will show the temperature - it should be 80°C or less. Everything is fine with a silent 80mm fan blowing on the heatsink. Mine now goes from 64-72 degrees depending on room temperature. I've noticed that even under load, the temperature doesn't rise more than a few degrees. Configuration issues may arise depending on your motherboard. On page 49 of the User's Guide it says when you see the following: Copyright © LSI Corporation Press <Ctrl><H> for WebBIOS keystrokes may not be recognized!, like PS2. If this option is disabled on this system, WebBIOS will not work. My system DOES have a PS2 port, but who actually owns it now? Since I have the port I guess I don't have a fancy BIOS setting to emulate the port for this card. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out why I couldn't get into the map configuration menu. However, there are other ways to configure the card using the command line (storcli) or management software. great performance - keep an eye on the heat! [Update 12/31/2020] I put this card in an MSI B550 Tomahawk motherboard which limits the slot to x4 operation which is said to limit the bandwidth to 2GB/s input and 2GB/s. Sec. I've only seen 1010MB/s with a RAID 5 array with 4 drives in an x8 slot, so it's unlikely you'll experience slowdowns due to limited stripes. Surprisingly I found that the MSI bios in UEFI mode allows me to configure the card right from the bios menu!

Pros
  • Eight internal SATA + SAS 6Gb/s ports
Cons
  • Very expensive
