Most experienced woodworkers recommend using an upward spiral except for grooving. However, for my specific need, I wanted to avoid the typical tearing that often occurs when using an upcut bit. Of course, they're better at removing sawdust while the blade is cutting, but they tend to cause cracks around the slot if you're using a plunge router to do the job. I thought long and hard and decided that for my needs of building a stroller for my granddaughter a downward spiral would be better. It worked like a charm. I'm only taking off one star because it costs 2-3 times more than a double fluted flute. Otherwise this is a serious addition to my collection of router bits.
