They swivel - square drive
I don't use a 1/2 inch adapter. 3/8' works well and holds sockets well. The 1/4' turns well, but the ball detents don't hold the bushings well and come off too easily. I use them with a 1/4" impact wrench and they turn well when loosening the nuts but bind inside when installing the nuts.
