The units are freely installed without the top cover of the rails.
I have a 1996 Dodge Ram 2500 and it's very easy to install them, they don't pinch so they move, the way I fixed it was bang a hammer on it and bend the ends a bit so they are closer to the top. Just small adjustments made a huge difference in keeping them snug and snug with no movement. Without them there would be rattling, so not ideal if you don't have a top rail cover on your truck.
