Heavy Metal - Simple Collars

After reading countless reviews of dog tracking collars, I chose Fi and Whistle Go Explore. Both seemed relatively comparable in terms of features and performance, and like many products, both had mostly positives and some sharp negatives. So looks mattered: I liked that the Fi looked slimmer and lower than the Whistle. That's why I bought Fi. But this review is about the collars themselves, not the tracker itself. When I received the Fi I was shocked at how heavy it is. My 37-pound beagle is by no means a small dog, but compared to his previous collar, he'd wonder why the heck I put him through this heavy, clumsy device chained around his neck. So I changed my mind and ordered a Whistle Go Explore, thinking if I also ordered a matching whistle collar it might simplify the whole setup. And there's no way he can be as heavy as Fi, right? Wrong - it's MORE DIFFICULT! The Fi weighs 123g, or just over a quarter of a pound. The whistle collar with tracker weighs an impressive 162 g (5.7 oz)! I don't understand why they designed these things to look like prison shackles. Why can't you use plastic buckles like most regular dog collars? My dog's nylon collar with plastic buckle is reasonably secure. (In fact, sometimes it hurts to untie it.) I ended up returning this collar. I kept the whistle and attached it to my dog's regular collar with an appropriate weight. The whistle itself weighs only 27 g and is therefore handy. Unfortunately, it looks like he has a tumor on his back. If you have a large, sturdy dog, this might not be a big deal. But any dog under, say, 50 pounds might not be too pleased.
