Do everything on the drive.
. and I'm happy to report that it only works on Debian GNU/Linux Sid. ThinkPad A31. Ehci-hcd in the kernel, sr as a module; udev finds it and it appears as /dev/sr0 and does whatever I want it to do. It may also work with the included proprietary software on Microsoft XP; I never got around to trying.
