Review on ๐Ÿ”ง Gates TCKWP307 Engine Timing Belt Kit incl. Water Pump by Kanwar Mix

Some components are of poor quality which may result in premature failure

I repair all cars for my extended family including timing belts. I usually bought Gates kits because I thought they had a good reputation. I now have two installations out of service (no intervention on the Miate) and on the Focus (unfortunately the engine is noisy). Both engines ran very well for about 10,000 miles and then stalled. Since both of them weren't at home, I couldn't determine which component had failed, but the mechanic only made the general diagnosis "toothed belt damage". My previous jobs have clocked up 100,000 miles with ease. This kit came with my son's Subaru Outback. During installation I came across a YouTube video of another manufacturer complaining that many of the parts in Gates kits are now from China where they originally came from OEM country. What surprised me in this particular situation was the tensioner. It comes with instructions that will void your warranty if you don't squeeze the piston a few times before installation to ensure air is expelled from it. I followed those instructions verbatim, installed, and the belt quickly jumped two teeth when I loosened a not particularly tight crank bolt to reattach the crank pulley. Then I noticed that I could easily push the tensioner all the way down with my hand. I put a torque wrench on the idle screw and was able to lower the piston with only about 10 foot-pounds of pressure. I reinstalled the original Subaru tensioner and showed 40 ft-lbs with little piston movement (the tensioner tensioner bolt started turning at this point, so I stopped). I do not trust this Chinese peeker and will not use it. In the future I will only buy headsets (possibly also individual parts) that are supplied by the OEM. John
