Ignore what the vehicle compatibility checker tells you - this unit works great with 2017 Toyota Tacoma. I have a TRD Off Road double cabin short bed and it works great! A few installation notes: I agree with other reviewers who state that the instructions are wrong when installing this unit in a Tacoma. You will need a GOOD T27 torx bit (not cheap from some shipping companies near the port) and be careful when removing/tightening the tailgate bolts. Because they screw into the plastic, the threads can be stripped easily. I did it with at least three screws. It takes a bit of work to route the wiring from the tailgate to the floor of the truck. You need to pull out two rectangular pieces of plastic and figure out how to place the factory camera wiring as well as the P&L drive cable. It's possible, but it's not fun, and I ended up breaking both plastic pieces. I recommend running the wire along the passenger side of your truck along the frame rail. Be sure to route the wire behind the exhaust cowl to avoid damaging the wire with exhaust heat. You will know when you see it. To guide the cable into the driver's cabin, you will find a rubber stopper in the driver's cabin floor, for example under the passenger seat. (See image) Remove the plastic cover with 2 x 10mm screws exposing the rubber bushing. Remove the tape surrounding the existing wiring that leads into the cab and then route the P&L wire into the cab along with the factory wiring. Tape it on, then replace the plastic cover and you won't even know there's non-factory wire in there and you haven't damaged your cab's weatherproofing (as is). The cable runs under the passenger seat and from there it can simply be routed into the cable duct for the rocker panel to the passenger step strip. No tools are required to remove the wear plate and skid plate. You manually loosen a plastic nut in the skid plate and pull it out. The rocker panel is then pulled straight up out. Both are only held by spring clips. In the passenger console, disconnect the two white wire connectors to reveal the bottom black connector (the only one there). Disconnect the black wire connector and expose the bottom green and red wires; Those are the wires for the passenger lock. (picture attached). Connect real wire taps to them, or solder them like I did - green to green and blue to red. DO NOT use the faucets that come with this kit, they are junk. The end result is that when you open all four doors (crew cab) or both doors (access cab), your tailgate will open with the key fob. The actuator makes a strong "popping" sound when actuated - some complain it's too loud, but it's true! This is TAILGATE. Overall I am very happy with this kit and mod and would highly recommend it to all Tacoma riders. You'll never have to worry about accidentally locking the tailgate again.
