Review on πŸ”₯ Tan QY 1394 Firewire Card - Add 3 1394A Firewire Ports to your Desktop PC with PCIe Expansion - Perfect for DV Connection by Reid Rickerson

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Has worked so far with a few caveats

I needed this card to import files/videos from my early 2000's Panasonic Mini DV camcorder to my computer in 2020. The camera only seems to support FireWire for storing digital footage, and of course neither my Windows 10 PC nor my laptop had a FireWire port. Working with 20 year old technology is always a challenge. But like many others, I have dozens of mini DV tapes containing important memories that otherwise cannot be shared. First, good. It arrived on time via Prime and in good condition. As advertised, it was basically plug and play. It fits into the PCI e x1 Express card slot in your laptop (check your slots before ordering. Most of my slots are now PCI2 or something). Once I had it installed (physically plugged in, screwed the screw in the back and closed the computer), I turned on the power. On the first try, the computer screen went blank and my heart sank. I restarted and tried again and it happened. After connecting the card to the computer with a Firewire cable and DV playback software (I had a free WinDV v1.2 camcorder). Bad: As in reality in 2020, expect 0 technical support or instructions or manuals that come with the product. All we have to do is use the Revain reviews and You Tube will help troubleshoot. Supplied cable (4-pin to 6-pin) The 4-pin side could not be connected to my camera or card. Luckily I bought a separate FireWire cable which solved the problem. I'm removing the asterisk, however, because what I bought wouldn't have worked without that extra cable. The problem that the computer (Windows 10, 64-bit) did not start up the first time was also annoying. I wonder if the card will cause problems in the long run. Conclusion: Despite a few hiccups, the product wasn't difficult to use and work with and solved my problem. Be prepared to buy an extra cable just in case. Have a little patience but it worked for me and the joy of finally having videos on my computer that had previously been mostly lost was amazing. Much luck!
