When used without the addition of additional flux, it smells unlike any pair of fluxes I have ever smelled and unfortunately I have smelled many different fluxes in my time. It smells like your house after turning on the heat for the first time in the fall. Without additional flux, this wick really doesn't work that well: the solder and any remnants of the old flux will start to burn if you linger too long. I think their claim that it removes "four times as much solder as a regular wick", "much faster than flux-based Type R wicks", is largely due to the number of filaments, which appear thinner, and on the pattern. Braids, but that's my guess. NTE doesn't have a proper datasheet, but given the quoted statement from their website, it's not a rosin-based flux. Your flux is either not very good or maybe not enough in it because with the addition of my RA flux it works MUCH better.
