Review on Cisco-Linksys WMP54G Wireless-G PCI Adapter: High-Speed Connectivity for Your Desktop by Jonathan Sriubas

A Piece of Crap in the Computers and Accessories Department

I've had good luck with a few other Linksys products, but this one hit rock bottom. Too bad I didn't read the reviews before my friend bought it. The Linksys wired and wireless broadband routers are top notch. Even their laptop wireless adapter works great for me. But this unit was incredible. The installation took several hours. The driver software didn't even start when you clicked the 'Setup' button. You have a quick flash and the software didn't start (with XP). I found another way to install it from a command prompt here (Run the installer from the "Utilities" folder). The hardware is finally installed, but of course it doesn't work. A few hours after lingering with tech support, I was told to hard code the IP address on the card (my DSL provider provides IP addresses automatically). Worked for a few hours and stopped working. We gave up there. Linksys really hit that bullshit. Apparently they have no experience or business in PCI cards. They had to stick to the routers. We bought a PCI card from D-Link (HALF THE PRICE!) and it was up and running in literally less than 5 minutes. It showed a strong signal, and the funny thing is that when the Linksys card was connected, it read a weak signal for several minutes (5ft from the router).

Pros
  • An Absolute Legend
Cons
  • Some Bugs
