Nice gauge! for testing, measuring and checking

This is a very good little gauge. I've worked with good test equipment for most of my professional life, and I'm generally ruthless when it comes to evaluating tools, even cheap ones like this (though I should know better than to be overly critical). So if such a device really exceeds my expectations, I notice it. This little guy was perfect in every way. It arrived without incident and was ready to use immediately. Build quality, fit and finish were excellent. The display is small and not backlit, but hey, it's a $25 device. I then measured our tap water (77ppm) and filtered fridge water (40ppm). The readings were stable and consistent. Expect the reading to be slightly different when the water temperature differs from the instrument temperature, as the temperature sensor must equilibrate with the water temperature and the internal ppm calculation is corrected for temperature. When the temperature on the display stops changing, your reading should be stable. Here's what I did to evaluate the accuracy of the meter: I ran a test with distilled water in a clean cup and the meter correctly read 0ppm. Nice to see. I also order a 1000ppm test solution from the same company. The meter is factory calibrated at a lower dilution (342ppm) as it is closer to the 0-200ppm readings of typical tap water, but despite this the meter showed readings between 999, 1000 and 1001ppm in a 1000ppm test dilution which is impressive . I didn't calibrate the instrument as it was already up. Once it hung during the measurement and did not respond to any buttons. I didn't have the patience to wait to see if it would shut down and fix the problem, so I took the battery out (easy to do) and checked the battery voltage while I was at it. I put the battery back in and everything worked. Please note that you can unfortunately insert the battery the wrong way round. Nothing hurts, but unit will spawn DOA. It would be nice if the battery holder was attached to the case to prevent this. The lid for storing the handpiece fits well but surprisingly does not vent. If the cap is put on while the probe is still wet, I assume the moisture will remain on it for a very long time. You may have a reason for this design, but I wanted to mention it anyway. All in all a handy little meter. But I would buy it again without hesitation. Actually, I also need a cheap pH meter and will also consider their suggestions.

Pros
  • Digital Calibration (button)
Cons
  • Unbelievable price
