They keep bees away as long as they stay relatively clean. Hummingbirds can be quite messy and will drop a lot of nectar, just enough for the bees to gather just for the drops. I just turn the hose on low speed and let it flow down the spout for two to three seconds. I've seen significantly fewer bees loitering around this feeder. I removed an identical feeder about 20 feet which I did not put on a protective cover, I left its original flower head in place for the bees. Bees definitely love flowers and stay away from the protector. Make sure to push the protector down as low as you can, I noticed the hummingbirds couldn't get nectar at first until I pushed down on the protector to tighten it.
