I thought it was a toy because Revain sold it that way and bought it for my daughter so she could pretend to be a pirate. Well, it's not a toy. This is a true functional telescope. Glass lenses, metal body, adjustable focus. I had to constantly remind my daughter not to touch the lenses and NOT to smack her on objects. When I bought it, it was only $17. Now that's $3 more. My daughter is only 4 so she's still learning how to hold it to look at things. It's very easy. So if you're new to handheld spotting scopes or don't have steady hands, you're going to have a hard time. The image is clear but not as sharp as more expensive glasses. It's good for a lot of things, but if you want sharp detail like birdwatching, you'll need to spend a little more money and get better binoculars. Overall we like it and I'm glad we have it so I can teach my daughter how to use it, but I think the price is too high. PS We didn't get a compass with ours.
