Our PS3 had problems reading discs of all kinds; We narrowed it down to a floppy drive and when we got it it already had a few scratches. As soon as we installed it, it had a loud, scary grinding noise and still wouldn't read discs. So we announced we were going, but a good shot and installed our original floppy drive and it worked._. but shortly after that we found that he was reading discs whenever he wanted which was very frustrating and he was freezing! We did further investigation and concluded that this is a software issue. I formatted my PS3 last night and this morning I tested 5 different games on discs and it worked every time! If you go this route, back up your data manually. If you're using a PS3 backup system and restoring it, the error that could be due to the drive not reading could still be present in your restore (this happened to us, so we're reformatting).
