I've read that using steel wool in a hole that mice go through will deter them as they don't like to chew on steel wool. After spending $300 to get rid of the mouse in the wall and find another one to take its place, I decided to try a different route. I found a hole in the basement for them to climb between the walls and stuffed it with steel wool. I sprinkled the potato flakes over several jar lids, being careful not to leave an odor on them with my hands, and placed them near the hole. Potato flakes are eaten, swelling up in their stomachs and killing them. They couldn't get back into the wall so obviously they were looking for water and now they can't hit my wall. Since then, mice have not been seen or heard.
